Most lateral moves that don’t work out fail for the same reason — they were decided too late.

Industry research from NALP shows that lateral partner attrition is most concentrated in the first two years, with post-move misalignment and integration gaps cited far more often than lack of business.

That aligns closely with what we see in practice.

The difference between outcomes often comes down to when key questions get answered. The partners who do best tend to address these before urgency enters the picture:

• Does my current platform still support how my practice is actually evolving?
• How does my work integrate with other practices, not just exist alongside them?
• What assumptions am I making that I haven’t pressure-tested yet?
• If nothing changed this year, what would that realistically mean for my practice?

Monday tends to create momentum.
But momentum without direction is how optionality quietly disappears.

The most effective career work we see happens early, deliberately, and without pressure.
